The Mill

The Mill is the center for entrepreneurship in Bloomington. It features 19,000 square feet of beautifully renovated, century-year-old factory space and is home to hundreds of members and dozens of companies. The Mill provides specialized entrepreneurial support for accelerating startups, pitching to investors, and securing capital.

ASSOCIATE ENTREPRENEUR-IN-RESIDENCE

The Associate Entrepreneur-in-Residence’s primary responsibility is supporting company creation across the Velocities region: Bloomington and Columbus, Indiana. This position includes coaching and mentoring startups, managing regional programs that serve the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, and working closely with the Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Velocities team to assist with regional events, meetings, and other activities for entrepreneurs.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Your roles and responsibilities will include: 

Company Creation (70%)

  • Identify and support businesses that can spinoff startup/new companies throughout the region
  • Assist new ventures with product-market fit and help position them to raise capital
  • Leverage intellectual property at companies/organizations/universities and identify founders to build new companies

Regional Program Management (30%)

  • Manage existing regional programs, including Cybersecurity Exchange (sector-specific efforts to increase cyber-related enterprises), Venture Studio (creating spinoff ventures from existing corporations), and others.
  • Recruit and build relationships with stakeholders to build programs that support the regional entrepreneurial ecosystem
  • Assist with regional events, meetings, and other activities led by the Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Startup Ecosystem Manager, and the Velocities Board of Directors.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Entrepreneurial experience, including founding startups, preferably with an exit, or experience with corporate innovation
  • Senior management role in a startup or first- or second-stage company
  • Board/advisory board experience
  • Raising angel/accredited funding and/or venture capital funding or alternative forms of capital such as grants, government funds, and contracts
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business, information technology, management information systems, computer engineering, advanced manufacturing material science, or a related field. A degree in other disciplines will be considered, given relevant professional experience.
  • Residing and working out of Columbus, Indiana is highly preferred

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Annual salary is commensurate with experience and ranges from $60-70,000.
  • Paid twice monthly via direct deposit
  • 3 weeks of PTO in year 1, 4 weeks in year 2

STARTUP ECOSYSTEM MANAGER

The Startup Ecosystem Manager’s (SEM) primary responsibility is tracking and reporting metrics related to company creation and growth in the Velocities region: Bloomington and Columbus, Indiana. This position includes board administration, operations, and communications, working closely with the current Entrepreneur-in-Residence to track the progress of regional startups, assisting with the planning and execution of all events and meetings.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Your roles and responsibilities will include:

Supporting Entrepreneur-in-Residence (50%)

  • Track startup progress, engagement, and other metrics set by the board across the Velocities partnership region
  • Summarize and identify emerging trends across the region and bring them to the attention of the EIR and Velocities board
  • Work with the Elevate Ventures team track the partnership metrics, budget, and overall progress across the region
  • Attend regional events as a Velocities representative when the EIR is unable to attend

Communications & Reporting (30%)

  • Implement regional community outreach, marketing, and stakeholder management strategies, including the production of communications such as the annual report, stakeholder reports, and press releases
  • Manage and execute Velocities events across the region, including collaboration with board members, Elevate Ventures, regional stakeholders, and others

Board Operations & Administration (20%)

  • Plan and attend monthly Velocities board meetings, including: securing the venue, preparing agenda, drafting and circulating minutes, and following up on action items discussed
  • Manage special projects identified by the board

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business, or a related field. A degree in other disciplines will be considered, given relevant professional experience
  • Interpreting data, organizing, coordinating, and scheduling
  • Experience with entrepreneurs and/or corporations in a similar outreach role is a plus but not required
  • Board/advisory board administration experience is a plus, but not required
  • Residing and working out of Columbus, Indiana is highly preferred
